San Jose, CA (March 22, 2026) – A teen rider was killed, and another was injured in an electric bicycle crash on Thursday afternoon, March 19, in San Jose.
Officers responded to the intersection of Remington Way and Allenwood Drive just before 1:10 p.m. after reports of a solo e-bike crash. Authorities said a juvenile male was operating a Magnum Cosmo electric bicycle with another juvenile riding as a passenger.
The e-bike was traveling north near the intersection when it lost control and skidded to the ground. Emergency units arrived and provided aid to both individuals at the scene. The operator was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The passenger was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
The identities of those involved have not been released. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased e-bike operator.
What Can Cause an Electric Bicycle to Lose Control?
Electric bicycles can lose control for several reasons, especially when carrying more than one rider. Extra weight can affect balance, making it harder to steer or stop safely.
Speed is another factor. E-bikes can travel faster than traditional bicycles, which may reduce reaction time and increase the risk of skidding, especially during turns or sudden braking.
Road conditions also play a role. Uneven pavement, loose debris, or wet surfaces can cause tires to slip. Wearing protective gear and maintaining control at safe speeds can help reduce the risk of a crash.
