Oracle, AZ (May 22, 2026) – A San Manuel man lost his life on Thursday morning, May 21, after a head-on collision on State Route 77 near Biosphere Road outside Oracle.
Investigators said 42-year-old Ryan Felix was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu northbound on SR-77 when his car crossed the centerline and entered oncoming traffic. The Malibu then struck a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the opposite direction.
Felix was pronounced dead at the roadside. The driver of the Silverado was taken to a Tucson hospital with a broken leg following the crash.
The highway remained fully blocked for part of the morning while emergency units worked to clear the roadway. Traffic resumed later that morning after crews finished their work.
Investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Felix.
What Factors Are Commonly Reviewed After a Head-On Highway Collision?
Head-on highway crashes are often severe because both vehicles may be traveling at significant speeds when contact occurs. After this type of wreck, investigators usually examine lane positioning, tire marks, roadway design, and traffic conditions to determine how a vehicle crossed into opposing lanes.
Vehicle damage patterns can also help show the direction and force of contact. In some cases, road curves, visibility, or driver actions become important parts of the review process. Medical findings and seat belt use may also provide additional details about the seriousness of the injuries involved.
Road closures are common after major highway collisions because crews need time to remove vehicles, document evidence, and safely reopen travel lanes. Even when traffic resumes quickly, investigators may continue gathering information for days afterward.
