SANBORN, O'Brien County, Iowa, Oct. 26, 2026 — A 16-year-old Spencer girl was taken to the hospital by ambulance after a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon, October 24, on West 4th Street in Sanborn, according to the Sanborn Police Department.
Police said a 16-year-old Hartley boy was driving a 2008 Pontiac westbound on West 4th Street, with the Spencer girl following behind in a 2011 Chevy SUV. Officers reported that both vehicles had been driving erratically on the way from Sibley and continued driving carelessly after entering Sanborn.
According to the report, the Pontiac turned onto 4th Street and the SUV turned in behind it, then pulled up alongside the Pontiac. When the Pontiac driver attempted to turn left into an alley, the two vehicles collided. The impact pushed the Pontiac into a utility pole, breaking it.
The Spencer teen was taken by Sanborn Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Hospital. A passenger in the Pontiac was also taken to Sanford Sheldon, by a parent. The Pontiac's driver was not hurt, according to police.
Police estimated damage to the Pontiac at $3,500 and to the Chevy SUV at $4,500. The utility pole, owned by the city of Sanborn, was valued at $500. No charges had been filed as of the time of the report, and the investigation remains open.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is distracted or erratic driving so dangerous?
Any lapse in attention or unpredictable driving reduces the time a driver has to react. Even a second or two of distraction or an abrupt move can leave no room to avoid a collision.
Where do most traffic crashes happen?
Many crashes occur on ordinary residential and local streets, not just highways, often at intersections or turns where drivers misjudge another vehicle's position or speed.
