Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal pedestrian crashes most frequently happen?
They tend to cluster on busy multi-lane roads, especially near intersections, airports, or commercial strips where foot traffic crosses vehicle lanes without a signal or crosswalk nearby.
What factors make a pedestrian crash more likely to be fatal?
Low light, higher travel speeds, and limited visibility for drivers or walkers all raise the odds of a deadly outcome. Darkness and reduced sightlines are common factors in nighttime pedestrian deaths.
How does vehicle speed affect survivability for a pedestrian who is hit?
Even modest increases in speed sharply reduce a pedestrian's chance of surviving impact, which is why lower posted speeds near crossings and airports matter so much.
