SANGER, Fresno County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — A driver suspected of impairment reportedly crossed the center line on State Route 180 and struck a fence on Friday evening, October 16, near Rio Vista Avenue in Sanger, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver was headed eastbound on SR-180 and veered across into the westbound lanes before coming to rest off the roadway. A witness reported the vehicle was driven recklessly in the eastbound lanes before the crossover, according to dispatch logs. The vehicle, described as a gray Toyota sedan, reportedly came into contact with a chain-link fence and ended up stuck roughly 30 feet off the road.
Radio traffic noted that the driver was believed to have been drinking and was reportedly seen throwing items from the vehicle before it came to a stop, though neither detail has been confirmed by official report. The driver remained inside the vehicle until crews arrived. Emergency medical personnel were sent to the scene as a precaution, and it was not immediately clear whether anyone was transported for treatment.
Separately, dispatch logs reference a second collision in the area involving a black Chevrolet Malibu and a black sedan, along with debris in the roadway. It is not confirmed whether that incident was connected to the crossover crash. A tow truck was called to remove the Toyota from where it came to rest.
The California Highway Patrol has not released the driver's name, age, or whether charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I think a driver near me is impaired?
Keep a safe distance, avoid trying to pass or signal the driver, and call 911 with your location and a description of the vehicle so authorities can respond.
Why do impaired-driving crashes tend to cause more serious injuries?
Impairment slows reaction time and judgment, which usually means no braking or steering correction happens before impact, so speeds and crash forces stay higher.
Can drugs other than alcohol affect driving?
Yes. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and illegal substances can all impair reaction time, coordination, and judgment behind the wheel.
What are common warning signs of an impaired driver?
Weaving between lanes, inconsistent speed, delayed braking, and driving without headlights at night are all signs worth watching for and reporting.
