What Investigators Review After a School Bus Roadway Departure
When a school bus leaves the roadway, investigators typically examine driver actions, road conditions, and vehicle behavior leading up to the moment it leaves the pavement. Factors such as steering input, braking, and roadway alignment may help explain how the bus entered a wooded area.
Mechanical condition is also reviewed to determine whether any equipment issues contributed to the loss of control. In addition, investigators usually look at weather, visibility, and roadway design in the surrounding area.
Because school buses carry passengers, these cases frequently involve detailed inspections of safety systems and interior conditions. Information from vehicle data, witness accounts, and scene evidence can help reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the crash.
