SEAL BEACH, Orange County, Calif., Nov. 7, 2026 — One person died on Friday morning, November 6, in a rollover crash on southbound I-405 at the transition to westbound SR-22 in Seal Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported shortly after 6 a.m. on the connector ramp linking southbound I-405 to westbound SR-22 near the I-605 interchange. A log entry described a gray Chevrolet that appeared to have overturned on the roadway, with airbags deployed. Orange County Fire Authority crews responded to the scene, and at one point asked the CHP to shut down the SR-22 transition because fire personnel were working in a blind spot.
The crash was later classified as a fatality by the CHP, though the agency has not released the name, age, or gender of the person killed. No other injuries were reported in the log.
The transition lanes were closed for an extended period while Caltrans crews set up an attenuator truck and prepared for what the log described as a "hard closure." A SigAlert was issued and extended multiple times, eventually running about two hours, as crews worked to clear the wreckage and arrange a tow. The CHP has not released further details on what led to the rollover, and the cause remains under investigation.
We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes like this tend to happen?
Interchange ramps and transition lanes, where traffic merges or shifts lanes at speed, see a disproportionate share of serious single-vehicle crashes compared with straight freeway sections.
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, loss of vehicle control, and rollovers all raise the chance that a crash will be fatal, especially when the vehicle strikes a barrier or overturns.
How does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Even modest increases in speed raise the force involved in a crash sharply, which lowers the odds of survival and increases the severity of injuries.
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much in a rollover?
A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown around the cabin or ejected during a rollover, which is one of the biggest factors in whether someone walks away from this kind of crash.
