Why Early-Morning Highway Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Crashes that occur during the early morning hours often present additional risks for drivers and passengers. Traffic volumes may be lower overnight, leading to higher travel speeds on major highways.
Visibility can also be reduced before sunrise, particularly in areas with limited roadway lighting. Darkness may make it harder to detect disabled vehicles, lane changes, or hazards ahead.
Driver fatigue is another factor that may affect roadway safety during overnight or early morning travel. People who are tired may react more slowly or have difficulty maintaining full attention while driving.
When crashes occur on high-speed interstates, the force of impact can be severe. Limited reaction time and higher speeds may increase the likelihood of serious injuries in collisions.
