Frequently Asked Questions
Why does following too closely increase the risk of a crash like this?
Leaving only a short gap between vehicles cuts down the time a driver has to react if traffic ahead slows or swerves suddenly. Even a half-second of added reaction time can be the difference between stopping safely and a collision.
Can one crash trigger additional wrecks nearby?
Yes. Vehicles that stop suddenly or end up blocking a lane can catch following traffic off guard, especially if visibility is limited or drivers are following too closely. That's why responders usually work quickly to clear debris and redirect traffic after an initial collision.
Why can multi-vehicle crashes take longer to sort out?
Investigators have to piece together how each vehicle was traveling, where impacts occurred, and in what order events happened, usually relying on physical evidence, witness accounts, and vehicle data recorders. That process can take time, particularly when early reports are incomplete.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Selma, CA
If you're involved in a crash in Selma, try to move to a safe area if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Exchange information with the other driver and note any details you can, like the time and general conditions. It's a good idea to see a doctor promptly for a checkup, even if you feel fine at the scene, and to keep copies of any medical records or police reports for your own files.
