Ormond Beach, FL (August 13, 2026) – A semi-truck driver was killed early on Thursday morning after a two-truck wreck on southbound I-95 near mile marker 276. The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. and involved two tractor-trailers.

According to the report, one tractor-trailer had struck a deer and became disabled in the outside lane. Its driver had activated the vehicle’s hazard lights before another southbound semi approached and struck the back of the disabled truck.

The second tractor-trailer caught fire after the rear-end collision. The driver of that truck died at the scene, while the driver of the disabled semi was not hurt. The deceased driver was identified as a 57-year-old Jacksonville man.

The southbound lanes remained closed for several hours before reopening around noon Thursday. Traffic was diverted from I-95 while crews cleared the wreck and fire. The circumstances surrounding the fatal wreck remain under review as investigators continue examining what happened.

Our deepest sympathies go to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life.

What Can Make Interstate Truck Crashes Especially Dangerous?

Large trucks may require substantially more stopping distance than passenger vehicles, particularly at highway speeds. Their size and weight can also make rear-end crashes more severe.

Disabled vehicles create an added hazard on high-speed roads. A truck stopped in a travel lane can be difficult to avoid, especially when traffic is moving quickly or visibility is limited. Hazard lights can alert approaching drivers, but they may not provide enough time to avoid a stopped vehicle.

Fire can create additional dangers after a truck crash because tractor-trailers may carry large fuel tanks and other materials. Smoke can also reduce visibility for nearby drivers and make traffic conditions more difficult.

Drivers can reduce risk by maintaining a safe following distance, watching for stopped vehicles, and moving away from disabled traffic when conditions allow.
