Why Stop Sign Intersections Can Be Especially Dangerous
Intersections controlled by stop signs require drivers to carefully judge traffic speed and distance before entering or crossing a roadway. When a vehicle fails to stop completely or misjudges approaching traffic, the results can be severe, particularly when larger commercial trucks are involved.
Semi-trucks need significantly more distance to slow down or come to a complete stop than passenger cars. Because of their size and weight, crashes involving heavy trucks can result in extensive vehicle damage and serious injuries even at moderate speeds. Visibility, roadway design, lighting conditions, and driver attention can all influence safety at intersections. Transportation agencies often review these factors after serious roadway incidents to better understand how such collisions occur and to identify potential safety improvements.
