Why Chain-Reaction Crashes Can Involve Multiple Vehicles and Structures
Chain-reaction crashes occur when an initial impact causes one or more vehicles to strike additional vehicles or nearby objects. These collisions can unfold in seconds, particularly on busy roadways where vehicles travel close together.
When a vehicle is pushed into another lane, a parked vehicle, or a structure, the risk of secondary impacts increases significantly. Buildings located near roadways can also be vulnerable when a vehicle loses control following a collision.
Investigators reviewing these crashes usually examine vehicle speeds, impact points, roadway conditions, and the sequence of movements after the initial contact. Understanding how each collision contributed to the overall chain of events helps determine how the crash progressed and why additional vehicles or structures became involved.
