Frequently Asked Questions
Why is distracted driving so dangerous, especially near schools?
Even a brief glance away from the road can mean missing a stopped vehicle, a crossing guard, or a child near the roadway. School zones demand full attention because conditions change quickly as buses, walkers, and cars converge at the same times each day.
How do weather and road conditions affect crash risk?
Wet pavement, glare from low morning sun, and reduced visibility can all extend stopping distances and make it harder for drivers to react in time, particularly during morning and afternoon school traffic.
What should I do immediately after a car accident?
Check for injuries, move to a safe spot if possible, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver, note the time and location, and wait for law enforcement to document the scene before leaving.
Where do most traffic crashes happen?
Many crashes occur at intersections and in areas with mixed traffic, such as school zones and residential streets, where vehicles are turning, slowing, or stopping in close proximity to one another.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Shawnee County, KS
If you're involved in a crash near a school or in a residential area, start by making sure everyone is safe and calling for medical help if anyone is hurt, even if injuries seem minor at first. Children in particular should be evaluated by a doctor after any collision, since symptoms are not always obvious right away. Get a copy of the official incident report once it's available, and keep notes on what you observed while the details are fresh. Follow up with your insurance company and a medical provider promptly so there's a clear record of any injuries or damage tied to the crash.
