Why Rural Road Crashes Can Be Especially Severe
Rural roads often carry a mix of traffic, including motorcycles, passenger vehicles, and large farm equipment. These vehicles can move at different speeds and may need more space to turn or slow down. On narrow roads, even a brief change in traffic flow can create a serious hazard.
Farm equipment can be large and difficult to pass safely. Its size may also limit visibility for other drivers nearby. Motorcyclists face added risk because they have less physical protection than people inside enclosed vehicles.
Ditches, gravel shoulders, and limited lighting can also affect crash severity. When a motorcycle leaves the roadway, the rider may face a higher chance of fatal injuries. Rural crash scenes may also be farther from nearby medical care.
