Pedestrian Crashes and the Numbers Behind Them
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas in 2023. That figure reflects where people walk most: dense streets, commercial corridors, and intersections like the one near this crash, where pedestrians and vehicles share limited space.
The urban concentration doesn't mean rural roads are safer for walkers in every sense. Rural pedestrian crashes often happen at higher vehicle speeds and carry a higher chance of death per crash. But sheer volume of foot traffic in cities means most pedestrian injuries and deaths nationally happen on urban and suburban streets, not highways or county roads.
Multi-victim pedestrian crashes, where more than one person is struck in the same incident, are less common than single-pedestrian strikes but tend to draw heavier emergency response and wider community attention. Investigators in these cases typically look at vehicle speed, sightlines, lighting, and whether marked crossings were in use at the time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, including Louisiana, pedestrians have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks once they have entered the roadway. Drivers are required to stop or yield, though pedestrians are still expected to use reasonable care.
How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting a pedestrian?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning both sides of the road before turning, and avoiding distractions behind the wheel all cut down on the time a driver has to react to someone stepping into the road.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, spinal injuries, and internal trauma. Severity generally depends on vehicle speed and the point of impact.
What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Distracted driving, failure to yield at crosswalks, poor visibility, and speeding are frequently cited factors in pedestrian crashes nationwide.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Shreveport, LA
If you're involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 immediately so injured people can get medical attention as fast as possible. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries like concussions or internal bleeding aren't obvious right away.
Witnesses should stay at the scene to speak with responding officers, since it can help investigators piece together what happened. Taking photos of the scene, if it's safe to do so, can also preserve details that matter later. Families of those involved should expect that investigations like this one can take time, and official updates typically come directly from the law enforcement agency handling the case.
