Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Even modest speed increases sharply raise the risk of death or serious injury in a pedestrian crash. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur on roadways without sidewalks or marked crossings, especially rural highways and roads with higher speed limits, where pedestrians may enter the travel lane unexpectedly.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night or early morning?
Reduced visibility in darkness or low light, such as the early morning hours, makes it harder for drivers to see pedestrians in or near the roadway, and a large share of fatal pedestrian crashes happen during these hours.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being struck by a vehicle?
If possible, call 911 right away and avoid moving unless staying in place poses further danger. Seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some, like internal injuries or concussions, aren't immediately obvious.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Silsbee, TX
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately so emergency responders can reach the scene quickly. If you're a witness, try to note what you saw, including the time and any details about the vehicles involved, in case authorities need that information later. Pedestrians who are struck, even those who feel only shaken up, should get checked by a medical provider, since adrenaline can mask pain from injuries that need treatment. Family members of someone involved in a crash like this should keep a copy of the police report and any medical records, which can be useful for insurance or other follow-up matters. Silsbee residents walking along rural roads, particularly before sunrise, may want to carry a light or wear reflective clothing to be more visible to drivers.
