Why Vehicle Speed and Low Light Make Pedestrian Crashes So Severe
A pedestrian has no frame, airbag, or crumple zone to absorb an impact. Whatever protection exists in a crash like this comes entirely from the vehicle slowing down or stopping in time, which is why speed and visibility matter more in these crashes than in most collisions between two vehicles.
Darkness narrows what a driver can see and how quickly they can react. Headlights illuminate only a limited distance ahead, and a pedestrian in dark clothing can be nearly invisible until a vehicle is already close. That shrinks the time a driver has to brake, turning what might be a near miss in daylight into a direct hit overnight.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 77 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark in 2023. Early morning hours before sunrise carry the same visibility problems as nighttime, with many drivers and pedestrians alike still adjusting to low light and the start of the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid hitting a pedestrian?
Slowing down in areas with limited lighting, scanning the roadside and crosswalks, and avoiding distractions all give a driver more time to spot someone on foot and stop safely.
What injuries typically result from pedestrian crashes?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since they have no structural protection against the impact.
What usually causes these crashes?
Common factors include low visibility, speeding, driver distraction, and pedestrians crossing outside marked crosswalks, though each crash depends on its own circumstances.
Does speed affect whether a pedestrian survives?
Yes. Survival rates drop sharply as vehicle speed increases, because higher speeds shorten braking distance and increase the force of impact.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Silver Spring, MD
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately so emergency responders can reach the scene quickly. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries are not immediately obvious.
Witnesses should stay at the scene if it's safe to do so and share what they observed with responding officers. Photographs of the scene, lighting conditions, and vehicle positions can help investigators piece together what happened.
