Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like these on interstates?
Lane departures, following too closely, fatigue and inattention are common factors in highway crashes, though the specific cause of each incident is determined by investigators reviewing the scene and any available evidence.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds increase stopping distance and the force involved in a collision, which generally means more serious vehicle damage and higher risk of injury.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky?
Taking eyes or attention off the road for even a few seconds reduces a driver's ability to react to a stopped vehicle, a lane departure or changing road conditions ahead.
How do road and weather conditions factor into highway crashes?
Wet pavement, debris, poor visibility and uneven road surfaces can all reduce traction and reaction time, making it harder for drivers to stay in their lane or stop safely.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Smith County, TN
If you're involved in a crash on an interstate, try to move to a safe area away from traffic if the vehicle is drivable, and turn on hazard lights. Call 911 right away so law enforcement and EMS can respond and document the scene. Even if injuries seem minor, it's a good idea to get checked by a medical provider, since some injuries don't show symptoms immediately. Remember to take photos of the vehicles and surrounding area if it's safe to do so, and get contact information for any witnesses. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it becomes available.
