SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Monroe County, Pa., Oct. 5, 2026 — A two-vehicle crash left at least one person injured Saturday evening, October 3, at the intersection of East Brown Street and University Ridge Drive near East Stroudsburg. Emergency crews responded and took one patient to a hospital.

Fire and EMS units were dispatched to the crash around 7:17 p.m., according to dispatch records. Responders reported no one was trapped in either vehicle. EMS crews reached the scene about eight minutes later.

By 7:45 p.m., medics radioed that they were transporting one person to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation. We hope those who were hurt recover fully.

How Investigators Piece Together a Two-Vehicle Crash

When crews arrive at a crash like this one, their first job is to stabilize anyone hurt and secure the scene, not to determine fault. Fault and sequence of events typically come later, once investigators can measure skid marks, photograph vehicle positions, and interview drivers and witnesses without the pressure of active traffic or medical emergencies.

A full report often takes time because it draws on several sources: officer observations, any available camera or dashcam footage, vehicle data recorders, and statements collected over days or weeks, not hours. If toxicology testing is ordered, lab results alone can take several weeks to come back, which is one reason agencies are often careful not to release preliminary findings before they are confirmed.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That broader context is part of why agencies move carefully: a final report has to hold up, not just come out quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are most common in two-vehicle crashes?

Impacts like this often cause whiplash, head or neck strain, bruising from seatbelts, and broken bones from the force of collision, even at moderate speeds.

What usually causes crashes at intersections like this one?

Common factors include failure to yield, misjudged turns, distracted driving, and sometimes poor visibility or timing at a light or stop sign.

Does speed change how severe a crash turns out to be?

Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which raises the chances of serious injury even in a two-vehicle crash.
