Harrisburg, PA (May 20, 2026) – A late-night house fire in Harrisburg left one person injured and displaced several residents after flames broke out inside a duplex on State Street on Tuesday night, May 19.
The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was called to the 1700 block of State Street at about 10:04 p.m. after reports of a residential blaze. When crews arrived, they found a fire on the first floor of a three-story duplex, with multiple people still inside.
Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the fire started after an accidental smoking-related mishap on the lower floor of the residence. About eight to nine people were living in the home at the time. Two people managed to get out on their own, while firefighters rescued the remaining occupants from the structure.
One person was taken to a hospital for treatment. The rest of the residents were displaced, and the Red Cross was assisting those affected on Tuesday night. Additional details about the injured person were not immediately released.
Crews continue working to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the fire. Our thoughts are with the residents forced from their homes as recovery efforts begin.
How Smoking Materials Commonly Contribute to House Fires
Smoking materials remain one of the leading causes of residential fires across the United States. Cigarettes and other smoking items can ignite furniture, bedding, carpeting, or trash if they are not fully extinguished. Fires linked to smoking often begin quietly and spread quickly before occupants realize danger is present.
Multi-story homes and duplexes can become especially dangerous during nighttime fires because smoke may travel rapidly through stairways and shared walls. In many cases, residents are asleep when the flames begin, reducing the time available to escape safely. Fire departments frequently encourage installing working smoke alarms on every floor of a home and recommend smoking outdoors whenever possible to reduce the risk of indoor fires.
