SOUTH BEND TWP, Blue Earth County, Minn., Oct. 1, 2026 — One person was hurt Wednesday afternoon, September 30, in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of eastbound Highway 60 and Highway 169, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The crash happened around 4:26 p.m. on a dry roadway, the agency reported.

A Chevrolet Traverse heading east on Highway 60 collided with a Nissan Altima heading south on Highway 169 inside the intersection, the State Patrol said. The report did not describe which vehicle had the right of way or what led to the collision, and that part of the crash remains unclear.

The driver of the Traverse, a 34 year old Elmore, MN woman, was reported to have non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System, according to the report. The driver of the Altima, a 71 year old Eagle Lake, MN man, was not reported injured. Mayo EMS, Lake Crystal EMS and the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

The State Patrol listed the crash report as believed complete as of Wednesday evening. No further detail on cause has been released.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

What Actually Reduces Crashes at Rural Highway Intersections

Rural crossroads like the one where two highways meet outside South Bend Twp often lack the traffic signals or turn lanes that slow traffic in cities, and speeds tend to run higher. Engineers have found that converting these intersections to roundabouts, adding flashing beacons, or installing rumble strips ahead of the crossing can cut the kind of broadside collision that happens when two vehicles arrive at the same point from different directions. Better sightlines, cut back brush and improved lighting also give drivers more time to react.

Behavior behind the wheel matters just as much as the road itself. Impairment and fatigue remain two of the most persistent factors in intersection crashes, often because a tired or distracted driver fails to register a stop sign, a signal, or oncoming cross traffic until it's too late to stop. Afternoon and evening hours, when fatigue builds and commuting traffic picks up, see a steady share of these collisions.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger vehicles made up 92 percent of registered vehicles and 89 percent of vehicle miles traveled in 2023. That scale means even a small reduction in risk at high-traffic crossings, through design or through driver attention, affects a large number of trips every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do weather and road conditions affect crash risk at intersections?

Wet, icy, or snow-covered pavement lengthens stopping distance and makes it harder to judge when it's safe to cross or turn. Even on dry pavement, as in this crash, visibility, speed, and driver attention still determine whether a vehicle can stop in time.

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Check for injuries, move to a safe spot if possible, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver, take photos of the scene and vehicle damage, and get checked by a medical provider even if injuries seem minor.

Where do most traffic crashes happen?

A large share of serious crashes occur at intersections, where vehicle paths cross and timing errors or misjudged gaps in traffic lead to collisions.

What can drivers do to stay safer at intersections?

Slowing down on approach, scanning cross traffic in both directions, and avoiding distraction in the seconds before entering an intersection all cut the chance of a collision.
