Tobyhanna, PA (September 6, 2026) – At least one person was injured in a two-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 380 in Tobyhanna Township shortly before 5:15 p.m. on Friday, September 4.
The vehicles came to rest near mile marker 1 in Monroe County. Traffic was briefly brought to a standstill while the vehicles were cleared from the roadway.
The circumstances surrounding the wreck remain under review. We hope everyone affected makes a full recovery.
Freeway Lane Disruptions Can Quickly Bring Traffic to a Stop
Interstate traffic depends on vehicles maintaining steady speeds and predictable lane positions. When two vehicles block or restrict part of the roadway, approaching drivers may have little space to merge around them, causing traffic to slow rapidly.
Those sudden speed differences can create additional challenges for motorists farther back in the traffic line. Drivers approaching at highway speeds may encounter stopped or slow-moving vehicles with relatively little warning, particularly around curves, hills, or other areas with limited sightlines.
Vehicle removal can also affect how long normal travel is interrupted. Tow equipment may need enough room to reach disabled vehicles and safely move them from active lanes. Even after lanes reopen, congestion can persist as backed-up traffic gradually moves through the affected stretch of the highway.
