SPARTANBURG, Spartanburg County, S.C., Oct. 3, 2026 — A pedestrian died on Friday night, October 2, after being struck by an SUV on a highway in Spartanburg, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The crash happened on US 176 near Commerce Point Boulevard.

Troopers said the SUV was traveling eastbound on US 176 at about 10:39 p.m. when it struck a pedestrian who was crossing the highway. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was reportedly not injured. Troopers have not released the identity of the pedestrian who died. The crash remains under investigation, and no further details have been made public.

Our sympathies are with the family of the person who lost their life.

Why Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Turn Deadly

A collision between a vehicle and a person on foot is not like a crash between two cars. There is no shared crumple zone, no shared frame built to absorb impact. The vehicle's bumper and hood meet a person directly, and the difference in weight between an SUV and a pedestrian leaves the person with almost nothing to absorb the force.

Speed matters as much as weight. On a highway like US 176, where posted speeds run well above neighborhood streets, the closing speed between a vehicle and someone crossing on foot can be far higher than in a parking lot or a residential intersection. A few additional miles per hour at the moment of impact can be the difference between a survivable crash and a fatal one.

Darkness adds another layer. At night, headlights illuminate only a limited stretch of roadway ahead, and a driver's ability to spot a person in dark clothing outside that cone of light drops sharply. A pedestrian crossing a highway after dark may not become visible to an oncoming driver until there is little distance left to stop, regardless of how attentive that driver is.

Frequently Asked Questions

What typically causes pedestrian accidents?

Common factors include drivers failing to see someone crossing, pedestrians crossing outside marked crosswalks, impaired driving, and limited visibility at night or in poor weather.

How much does vehicle speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?

Research consistently shows that survival odds drop sharply as vehicle speed increases, because higher speed means both a harder impact and a longer stopping distance.

Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?

A large share occur on higher-speed roads outside intersections, particularly where pedestrians cross away from marked crossings or signals.

Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?

Yes. Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people on foot, and a large portion of pedestrian deaths occur at night. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 24 percent of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes were struck by hit-and-run drivers in 2023.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Spartanburg, SC

Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately so emergency responders and law enforcement can reach the scene. Even if injuries seem minor, it's important to get a medical evaluation, since some injuries aren't immediately obvious.

If you are a driver involved in such a crash, stay at the scene, cooperate with responding officers, and avoid moving vehicles unless told to do so. Witnesses should remain if possible to share what they saw with investigators. For families affected by a pedestrian crash in Spartanburg, connecting with local victim support services or the investigating agency can help with next steps and understanding how the investigation will proceed.
