Mobile, AL (June 3, 2026) – A fatal traffic accident was reported shortly after midnight on Sunday, June 1, near Halls Mill Road and U.S. 90 in Mobile. Emergency units arrived and found 55-year-old Anthony Licalzi with life-threatening injuries.

According to investigators, Licalzi died at the roadside. Investigators stated that 20-year-old Luis Estaban Damas Lopez was traveling at a high rate of speed when his vehicle struck the other vehicle involved.

Lopez was arrested and booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail on a manslaughter charge. Court records show that he later entered a not guilty plea to reckless manslaughter, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 7.

Further details about the collision were not immediately available, but detectives are continuing to gather facts and review evidence related to the case.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Anthony Licalzi’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Why Excessive Speed Is Regularly Examined After Fatal Roadway Deaths

Speed is one of the first factors reviewed after a fatal roadway tragedy. Higher speeds can reduce the amount of time a driver has to react to changing traffic conditions, unexpected hazards, or vehicles entering an intersection. It can also increase the force involved when vehicles make contact.

Investigators usually review physical evidence, vehicle positions, witness statements, and roadway characteristics to determine whether speed contributed to what happened. Data from modern vehicles may also provide information about travel speeds and driver actions before contact occurred. In cases involving serious harm or loss of life, these findings can help explain how the sequence of events unfolded. Early reports frequently contain limited information, while a more complete picture develops as evidence is examined and additional details become available.
