What Is Georgia’s Move Over Law and Who Does It Protect?
Georgia’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane or slow down significantly when passing stopped emergency vehicles, utility vehicles, and road construction crews on the side of a highway. The law was designed to protect workers and first responders who are especially exposed while working near live traffic.
Construction zones on high-speed roads like multi-lane state highways are among the most dangerous workplaces in the country, particularly during overnight hours when visibility is reduced, and driver alertness tends to be lower. Violating the Move Over Law in Georgia is a criminal offense when it results in injury or death, and charges can include vehicular homicide. Workers in active highway construction zones rely entirely on drivers slowing down and changing lanes to stay safe.
