Frequently Asked Questions

What gear actually helps protect a motorcyclist in a crash?

A DOT-approved helmet, a riding jacket and pants built for abrasion resistance, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all cut down on injury severity. Reflective or high-visibility gear also helps other drivers spot a rider sooner.

What usually causes crashes between motorcycles and larger vehicles?

Common factors include a driver failing to see the motorcycle, misjudging its speed or distance, turning across its path, or changing lanes without checking a blind spot. Tractor-trailers in particular have large blind zones along their sides and rear.

Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than typical car crashes?

A motorcycle offers no outer frame, airbags, or seatbelts to absorb impact, so the force of a collision passes directly to the rider. Even a low-speed crash can throw a rider off the bike and onto pavement or into another vehicle.

How do left-turning vehicles end up colliding with motorcycles?

A car or truck turning left across oncoming traffic sometimes misjudges how close an approaching motorcycle is or doesn't see it at all, pulling into its path. This is one of the most frequent setups for car-motorcycle and truck-motorcycle collisions at intersections and ramps.

What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident in Springettsbury Township, PA

If you're involved in a motorcycle crash, get to a safe spot off the roadway if you're able to move, and call 911 right away. Even if you feel fine, ask for a medical evaluation at the scene or soon after. Adrenaline can mask pain from road rash, fractures, or head injuries that aren't obvious right away.

Take photos of the vehicles, the roadway, and any visible damage if it's safe to do so, and get contact information from anyone who saw what happened. Keep a copy of the police report once it's filed with the local department, and follow up with your doctor if symptoms like stiffness, headaches, or swelling show up in the days after the crash.
