Frequently Asked Questions
Does road surface condition matter for motorcycle safety?
Yes. Wet pavement, loose gravel, potholes and painted lane markings all reduce tire grip for motorcycles far more than for cars, making braking and cornering less predictable.
What gear helps protect a rider in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots can reduce the severity of head, road-rash and limb injuries in a fall or collision.
What usually causes car-motorcycle crashes?
Common factors include a driver failing to see or yield to a motorcycle at an intersection, sudden lane changes, and following too closely, though the cause of any specific crash is determined by investigators.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes?
Riders have no frame, airbags or seatbelt around them, so a collision at the same speed as a car crash commonly transfers more force directly to the rider.
