Why Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Can Be Fatal
Pedestrian accidents on highways are often deadly due to the high speeds of vehicles and limited reaction time for drivers. When a person is struck in a travel lane, even a minor collision can lead to serious or fatal injuries.
Multi-vehicle incidents can increase the risk, as a pedestrian hit by one vehicle may be vulnerable to subsequent impacts from other drivers. Emergency responders often have to work quickly to stabilize victims and transport them to medical facilities.
Highway design, visibility, and traffic speed all influence the likelihood and severity of pedestrian crashes. Drivers are advised to remain alert, especially in areas where people may be on foot, and pedestrians should avoid entering roadways except at designated crossings to reduce the risk of serious accidents.
