SPUYTEN DUYVIL, Bronx County, N.Y., Oct. 27, 2026 — One person suffered minor injuries early Monday morning, October 26, when fire broke out in a fourth-floor apartment at a residential building on West 235th Street in Spuyten Duyvil, according to the FDNY. Firefighters forced residents to evacuate as they worked to put out the blaze.
FDNY Battalion Chief Donnelly said crews responded to the building at 511 West 235th Street at approximately 2:22 a.m. Video taken by a bystander showed flames coming from a fourth-floor window as firefighters moved in to knock down the fire.
Residents said a building employee's wife went door to door warning neighbors to get out before fire crews arrived. The FDNY said the fire was under control and extinguished shortly after 3 a.m. EMS treated the person with minor injuries at the scene, and the report did not indicate that anyone was taken to a hospital.
The building superintendent said water used to fight the fire caused damage to at least two other apartments, one on the third floor and one on the fifth floor. Some residents reported losing personal belongings to water damage. One resident also said a pet cat went missing during the evacuation and had not been found as of the time of reporting.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. We wish those injured a full recovery.

Renters and homeowners insurance often covers fire and water damage, though coverage depends on the policy and whether the building owner or another party bears some responsibility. Residents should document damage with photos before cleanup begins.
What to Do After an Apartment Fire in Spuyten Duyvil, NY
If you're displaced by an apartment fire, start by contacting your insurance provider and the building management to report damage as soon as possible. Take photos of any affected belongings or living space before repairs begin, and keep receipts for temporary housing, meals, or replacement items. If you or a family member were treated for smoke inhalation or injury, follow up with a doctor even if symptoms seem minor at first, since smoke exposure can cause delayed effects. Ask the fire department or building management for a copy of the incident report for your records, and check in with neighbors, since shared hallways or utilities may affect when you can safely return home.
