How Bicycle and Vehicle Collisions Often Occur on Busy Roadways
Bicycle crashes involving vehicles often happen on roads where cyclists and motorists share the same lanes. Situations such as lane crossings, sudden stops, or loss of balance can place riders close to moving traffic, especially on busy urban roads.
Visibility can also affect how these incidents unfold. Drivers may not immediately see a cyclist if the rider moves into the roadway unexpectedly or if traffic is moving at higher speeds. Even brief moments can lead to serious outcomes when a bicycle and a larger vehicle are involved.
Road design, traffic flow, and the presence or absence of bike lanes may also influence safety. In areas without designated cycling lanes, riders often ride close to passing vehicles, increasing the risk of contact during lane changes or passing maneuvers.
