Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur at Urban Intersections
Urban intersections are common locations for pedestrian crashes because both drivers and pedestrians share the same space. Vehicles turning at intersections may cross paths with pedestrians walking across the street or along nearby sidewalks.
Visibility can also affect these situations, especially at night or during periods of heavy traffic. Street lighting, traffic signals, and surrounding buildings may influence how easily drivers can see someone in the roadway.
Drivers may also be focused on other vehicles, traffic signals, or turning movements. When attention is divided, pedestrians in or near the roadway may be harder to notice.
Because of these factors, intersections are often designed with signals, crosswalks, and other traffic controls to help organize the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
