Rollover Crashes and Their Impact on Roadway Safety
Rollover accidents can occur when a vehicle loses stability during a collision, sudden maneuver, or roadway departure. These incidents may involve a single vehicle or happen after contact with another vehicle.
Vehicles with higher centers of gravity, such as trucks and sport utility vehicles, can be more susceptible to rolling during certain impacts or sharp turns. Road conditions and vehicle speed may also influence the likelihood of a rollover.
Because vehicles can overturn and trap occupants, rollover crashes often require additional rescue efforts at the scene. Emergency responders frequently close nearby roads temporarily while they stabilize vehicles and assist injured people.
