Dublin, GA (June 26, 2026) – A 71-year-old Statesboro man lost his life on Tuesday, June 23, after he was struck by a passing vehicle while standing in the roadway beside a parked SUV on Ga Highway 19 in Dublin. The fatal collision happened at approximately 9:37 p.m. within the city limits.
According to the preliminary investigation, Kenneth Phillips had stopped his SUV, which was towing a utility trailer loaded with a metal carport, partially on the shoulder and roadway. Troopers said the SUV’s hazard lights were obscured from the view of approaching motorists by the trailer, which also lacked functioning lights. The roadway was described as dark and unlit.
Phillips was standing near the rear of the trailer when a southbound sedan struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. After the collision, the sedan left the roadway, entered the west shoulder, and crashed into a large creek. The sedan’s driver received minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the fatal crash remains active as additional details are reviewed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Kenneth Phillips during this difficult time.
What Information Is Reviewed After a Fatal Roadside Collision?
Fatal roadside collisions require investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding both the parked vehicle and the moving vehicle. Early findings may include where each vehicle was positioned, whether lighting or visibility affected drivers, and the sequence of actions leading up to the collision. Additional details are released only after all available evidence has been reviewed.
Investigators may also examine roadway lighting, vehicle equipment, and visibility from different directions of travel. Physical evidence, vehicle damage, and witness statements can help establish how the collision occurred. By reviewing these factors together, investigators can develop a more complete understanding of the circumstances that contributed to the fatal roadway collision.
