Frequently Asked Questions
Does the speed of a vehicle affect how likely a pedestrian is to survive being hit?
Yes. Slower speeds give drivers more time to stop or swerve, and they reduce the force of impact, which generally leads to less severe injuries for a pedestrian who is struck.
Where do most pedestrian crashes tend to happen?
Many occur on roads without sidewalks or marked crossings, especially where traffic moves at higher speeds, such as rural highways and state routes like SR 213.
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Low light and reduced visibility make nighttime crashes more common, particularly on roads without street lighting, which can make it harder for drivers to see people walking along or crossing the road.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?
Seek medical attention right away, even if injuries seem minor at first, since some injuries are not immediately obvious. It's also important to make sure the incident is documented by police.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Steubenville Area, OH
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately and avoid moving an injured person unless they are in further danger. Waiting for trained medical responders is safer than attempting to help someone move on their own, especially if broken bones or head injury are suspected. Get checked out by a doctor even after being cleared at the scene, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries. If you're a driver involved in this kind of crash, stay at the scene, cooperate with responding officers, and provide a clear and honest account of what happened. For residents of the Steubenville area, local hospitals and urgent care clinics can provide follow-up evaluation in the days after a crash, which matters even when injuries seem to have been treated already.
