Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers lower the chance of hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down near intersections and crosswalks, scanning both sides of the road before turning, and staying off phones while driving all give drivers more time to spot and react to pedestrians.
What injuries do pedestrians usually suffer when hit by a vehicle?
Common injuries include broken bones, head and spinal trauma, and internal injuries, since a pedestrian has no structure around them to absorb the impact.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes?
Frequent factors include drivers failing to yield at crosswalks or intersections, distracted or impaired driving, low visibility at night, and pedestrians crossing outside marked crossing areas.
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Yes. The faster a vehicle is traveling at impact, the more severe the injuries tend to be, and the lower a pedestrian's chance of surviving the crash.
