Why Bus Crashes Can Affect Multiple Passengers at Once
Crashes involving public transit buses result in multiple injuries because buses can carry a large number of passengers at any given time. Unlike occupants in passenger vehicles, bus riders may be standing, walking, or seated without individual restraint systems when a collision occurs.
Sudden impacts can cause passengers to be thrown forward, sideways, or against interior surfaces. When multiple large vehicles are involved, the force of the collision may increase the likelihood of injuries throughout the bus. Investigators typically review vehicle movements, traffic conditions, and roadway circumstances to better understand how these incidents occur and how similar crashes may be prevented in the future.
