Frequently Asked Questions
Does speed make a difference in whether a pedestrian survives being hit? Yes. Slower vehicle speeds give drivers more time to stop or swerve, and they reduce the force of impact, which lowers the chance of a fatal injury.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen? Many occur at or near intersections and on roads without sidewalks or safe crossing points, especially where posted speeds are higher.
Are pedestrians at greater risk after dark? Yes. Reduced visibility at night makes it harder for drivers to see people walking, which is one reason a large share of pedestrian deaths happen after sunset.
What should someone do if they're hit by a car? Call 911 right away, avoid moving unless necessary, and get checked by medical professionals even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms appear later. Get the names of drivers and witnesses and, if possible, note the responding agency and report number.
