SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Monroe County, Mich., Oct. 27, 2026 — A 25-year-old Lansing woman died early on Sunday morning, October 25, in a rear-end crash involving two vehicles on Ida West Road near Summerfield Road, according to the Michigan State Police.
Troopers from the Monroe Post said they responded around 2:37 a.m. to the crash scene. A preliminary investigation found that a westbound Ford Bronco, driven by a 40-year-old Monroe man, struck the rear of a westbound Ford Escape driven by a 27-year-old Tecumseh man.
The woman, a passenger in the Escape, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Escape's driver and another passenger in that vehicle were taken to Toledo Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Two passengers riding in the Bronco were evaluated and released at the scene.
Investigators say alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash. Ida West Road was shut down for several hours while the scene was processed.
The investigation is continuing. Michigan State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact Trooper John Singstock at the Monroe Post.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does following distance help prevent rear-end crashes?
Leaving enough space between vehicles gives drivers more time to react if traffic ahead slows or stops suddenly, reducing the risk of a rear-end collision.
Why is distraction often linked to rear-end accidents?
A driver who glances away from the road, even briefly, may not notice slowing or stopped traffic in time to brake, which is why distraction is a common factor in these crashes.
What injuries commonly result from rear-end crashes?
Rear-end crashes often cause whiplash, neck and back strain, and head or chest injuries from the impact, with severity depending on speed and whether occupants were restrained.
What should I do after being rear-ended?
Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, call for medical help if needed, and contact local police to file a report.
What to Do After a Rear-End Crash in Summerfield Township, Michigan
After a rear-end crash, get checked by a medical provider even if injuries aren't immediately obvious, since neck and back pain can take hours or days to appear. Follow up with your doctor if symptoms develop later, and keep track of any medical visits or missed work tied to the crash.
