SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Jackson County, Mich., Oct. 20, 2026 — A 32-year-old Hanover woman died early on Sunday morning, October 18, after a teenage driver being sought by state police crashed into a tree in Summit Township. Two other passengers were left in critical condition.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Jackson Post tried to stop a white Jeep Patriot near West Michigan Avenue and 24th St around 3:50 a.m. The Jeep reportedly took off south on 24th St, and troopers said they did not chase it.
Minutes later, Jackson County 911 got an automatic crash notification from a phone near 24th St and Morrell St. Troopers who responded found the Jeep had struck a tree.
A preliminary investigation points to a 17-year-old male driver from Jackson who was reportedly going at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the Morrell St. intersection before hitting a tree. Investigators believe alcohol and speed may have been factors, though that has not been confirmed. A 32-year-old female passenger from Hanover was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and an 18-year-old female passenger, also of Hanover, were taken to Henry Ford Hospital in critical condition. A 16-year-old male passenger from Jackson was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The case remains under investigation. Crews from the Summit Township Fire Department, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the Jackson Police Department, and Jackson Community Ambulance assisted state police at the scene.
