SLYMAR, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 — One person died Wednesday morning, October 14, after a pickup truck and a big rig collided on northbound I-5 in Sun Valley. The crash shut down all northbound lanes of the freeway for hours.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash was reported around 11 a.m. near Sheldon Street. Aerial video from the scene showed a white pickup truck partially wedged underneath the rear of the big rig.

One man died at the scene, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. A second man was taken to a hospital with injuries described as minor.

Crews shut down all northbound lanes of the freeway while crews worked to clear the wreckage.

The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

What Actually Cuts Down Fatal Truck Crashes on Freeways

A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh 20 times what a pickup truck weighs, and that mass changes everything about how a crash plays out. A fully loaded big rig traveling at highway speed needs roughly twice the distance to stop compared with a passenger vehicle. When a smaller vehicle ends up in that stopping zone, there is often no way to avoid a collision once it starts, regardless of how alert either driver is.

Road engineering has made real gains against this kind of outcome. Wider shoulders and dedicated truck lanes give drivers more room to react. Rumble strips warn of lane drift before it becomes a problem. Better lighting and clearer signage near merge points help truck drivers spot slowing or stopped traffic sooner, which matters more for a vehicle that cannot stop quickly.

Driver side improvements play a role too. Electronic stability control and collision-warning systems now standard on many newer trucks give drivers extra seconds of warning. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4 percent of large-truck drivers involved in fatal crashes had blood alcohol concentrations of .08 g/dL or higher in 2023, a figure that points to driver impairment as a smaller factor in these crashes than many assume, with mechanical and roadway conditions carrying more weight in outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I'm involved in a crash with a commercial truck?

Call 911, stay as far from traffic lanes as safely possible, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Document the scene with photos if you're able, and get the names of any responding agencies for your records.

Why do big rigs need so much distance to stop?

A loaded truck's weight means far more momentum to overcome. Stopping distance increases with weight, so a fully loaded rig at highway speed can take nearly twice as long to stop as a car.

What makes truck crashes more dangerous than typical car accidents?

The size and weight gap between a truck and a passenger vehicle means the smaller vehicle absorbs most of the force. Truck crashes are also more likely to involve underride, where a smaller vehicle slides partially beneath the trailer.

What are a truck's blind spots, and why do they matter?

Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, directly behind the trailer, and just in front of the cab. Vehicles lingering in these zones may not be visible to the truck driver at all, which is why it helps to pass quickly and avoid traveling alongside a truck for long stretches.
