SUN VALLEY, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 7, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 5 near Sheldon Street left at least one vehicle on its roof early on Tuesday morning, October 6.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash was first reported before 4:21 a.m. near the Branford Street overcrossing on northbound I-5. Initial reports described a silver Jeep colliding with a white SUV, which rolled over, and the log also noted a silver Nissan Altima that overturned. A second vehicle was reportedly involved on the center divider, and a semi truck was also noted in connection with a vehicle that ended up on its roof, though the CHP log does not make clear how all the vehicles relate to one another.

A person believed to be reporting the crash was described as on the right shoulder of the freeway. Fire crews and medical personnel responded, and the CHP log indicates one party was transported to Holy Cross Medical Center. The extent of that person's injuries has not been released.

All lanes of northbound I-5 were briefly stopped while crews worked the scene, and a SigAlert was issued affecting lanes 1 through 4 for about 20 minutes, with the HOV lane kept open. A tow truck was requested to clear the vehicles, with an estimated arrival of 20 to 25 minutes, CHP radio traffic showed.

The California Highway Patrol has not released additional details on what led to the collision or how many vehicles were ultimately involved. The investigation remains open.

We wish those injured a full recovery.

How Investigators Piece Together a Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crash

Figuring out exactly what happened when several vehicles collide on a freeway takes more than a quick look at the wreckage. Officers typically have to map out final resting positions, gather dashcam or nearby surveillance footage if it exists, and talk to multiple drivers and witnesses who may each have seen only part of the sequence. When a vehicle has rolled over, investigators also look at skid marks, debris fields, and vehicle damage to work out the order in which impacts occurred.

Names are usually withheld at first so that family members can be notified privately rather than finding out through a news report or social media. Agencies also wait on identification, which can require matching records or contacting next of kin, before releasing information publicly.

A full crash report, and any toxicology results if they are part of the investigation, can take weeks to finalize. Lab testing, data pulled from a vehicle's event recorder, and interviews with everyone involved all have to be completed and cross-checked before an agency is confident in its conclusions.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28,595 large-truck occupants were injured in multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes crashes with several vehicles hard to sort out?

When multiple cars and drivers are involved, investigators have to reconstruct a chain of events from scattered evidence, usually with witnesses who only saw one part of the collision. That takes more time than a single-vehicle crash.

What typically causes chain-reaction pile-ups on freeways?

Common factors include sudden braking, following too closely, reduced visibility, and one driver's mistake forcing sudden reactions from others nearby. Each factor can compound quickly in heavy freeway traffic.

How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up?

Leaving extra space ahead, slowing early when traffic is braking in the distance, and staying alert for sudden lane changes around you can help you react sooner if a crash starts to unfold nearby.

If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe spot if you're able and check on anyone nearby before doing anything else. Even if you feel fine, a medical evaluation afterward is worth getting, since some injuries from a rollover or impact don't show symptoms right away.

Giving yourself time to process what happened, and reaching out to family or a counselor if needed, matters just as much as the paperwork.
