Surprise, AZ (December 15, 2025) – Two Wittmann residents, Richard W. Goode, 82, and Anna S. Maas, 85, tragically lost their lives in a multi-vehicle collision on Loop 303 in Surprise earlier this week, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS).
The deadly crash took place at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, in the northbound lanes of Loop 303 near Clearview Boulevard. The Arizona DPS has since provided additional details regarding the chain-reaction collision involving three vehicles.
Preliminary findings indicate that a Toyota Sienna was heading northbound when its hood suddenly unlatched and flew open, obstructing the driver’s view. As the driver slowed down and attempted to exit the roadway for safety, a Nissan SUV traveling behind the Sienna crashed into the rear of the vehicle. Moments later, a Toyota SUV collided with the Nissan from behind, completing the three-vehicle crash sequence.
The driver and passenger of the Nissan SUV, later identified as Richard Goode and Anna Maas, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
The drivers of the other two vehicles were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not disclosed their identities, and no charges have been filed at this time.
The AZDPS continues to investigate the incident, focusing on whether mechanical failure, driver reaction time, or speed may have played a role. The northbound lanes of Loop 303 were closed for several hours as crash reconstruction teams worked at the scene.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Richard Goode and Anna Maas and wish strength to all affected by this tragic event.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Arizona
The collision that claimed the lives of Richard Goode and Anna Maas is a heartbreaking example of how quickly unforeseen mechanical issues can lead to fatal outcomes on Arizona’s highways. In this case, a sudden hood malfunction triggered a chain-reaction crash—an event that left two individuals dead and others injured in a matter of seconds.
Multi-vehicle accidents on high-speed roadways like Loop 303 often result in severe consequences due to the volume and velocity of traffic. When even a single vehicle slows unexpectedly—especially under mechanical duress—nearby drivers may have insufficient time or space to avoid a collision. Add in factors like impaired visibility, tailgating, or distraction, and the risk of pileups grows rapidly.
Arizona has seen a steady increase in freeway-related fatalities in recent years, particularly in suburban expansion areas such as Surprise and the West Valley region. While mechanical failures like the one in this incident are less common than driver errors, they can be just as deadly—especially when they create confusion or panic in fast-moving traffic lanes.
For victims and their families, the aftermath of a fatal crash is often devastating. Beyond the emotional trauma of losing a loved one, families are often left seeking answers, financial help with final expenses, and guidance on how to move forward. It is crucial in such situations to preserve evidence, obtain official reports, and explore all available avenues of support.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety continues to investigate this crash to better understand what led to the tragic loss of life. Their findings may lead to further safety recommendations or vehicle safety advisories in the future.
