Cass County, MI (May 26, 2026) – A woman was taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle accident on US-12 at Eagle Lake Road in Cass County just after midnight on Tuesday, May 26. Police say 50-year-old Cindy Basil of Granger failed to yield and pulled out from Eagle Lake Road into the path of an oncoming vehicle: the driver of that vehicle was hurt in the collision.
The extent of the injured woman’s injuries was not confirmed in the initial report on the wreck. Basil is suspected of having been impaired at the time of the crash, and police are actively investigating that possibility.
The inquiry into the full circumstances of the accident is ongoing, with more information expected as it becomes available.
We hope for a full recovery for the woman who was hurt.
How Does Impaired Driving Contribute to Failure-to-Yield Crashes in Michigan?
Failure-to-yield collisions happen when a driver pulls into traffic without allowing oncoming vehicles enough time to stop or steer clear. These crashes are dangerous on their own, but alcohol and drugs make them significantly more likely. Impairment slows reaction time, distorts depth perception, and reduces a driver’s ability to judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.
Late-night and early-morning hours see a higher concentration of impaired drivers on the road, which is why crashes during those hours often draw closer scrutiny. In Michigan, operating a vehicle while intoxicated carries serious legal penalties, and when another person is hurt as a result, those penalties increase considerably. Intersection crashes involving suspected impairment are among the most thoroughly reviewed types of traffic collisions.
