Pedestrian Safety at Intersections in Syracuse — What the Data Shows
Pedestrian crashes at city intersections are a known concern in Syracuse, particularly in neighborhoods where foot traffic and vehicle traffic mix throughout the day. Leg and shoulder injuries are common outcomes when a person is struck by a vehicle, and recovery can take weeks or months depending on the severity of the impact.
New York State law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks. Even so, crashes involving pedestrians continue to occur at intersections across the state, often in areas where speeds are relatively low but visibility or driver attention is limited.
Urban streets like Cleveland Avenue see a steady flow of both foot and vehicle traffic. Awareness of pedestrian activity, especially during afternoon hours when people are more active outside, can make a real difference in reducing the number of these incidents.
