Evangeline Parish, LA (June 23, 2026) – A 19-year-old St. Landry man died on Monday afternoon, June 22, after an accident involving a pickup truck and a towed auger in Evangeline Parish. The wreck happened around 2 p.m. on U.S. Route 167 near Ceeway Lane in the Bayou Chicot area.

State police identified the driver as Kyle Basco. He was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado north on U.S. Route 167 when a 2023 GMC Sierra towing an auger was heading south.

According to the preliminary report, the auger became tangled in an overhead utility line for reasons under review. A utility pole broke, and the auger overturned into the northbound lane before striking the Silverado.

Basco was properly buckled up, but his injuries were fatal. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision remains under review as investigators continue to gather details on how the equipment entered the opposing lane. We extend our sincere condolences to Basco’s family and loved ones.

Why Towed Equipment Can Create Serious Road Hazards

Large equipment being towed can create safety risks when it shifts, tips, or extends beyond the towing vehicle’s path. Items such as augers, trailers, and machinery may take up extra space and become difficult to control if they come into contact with nearby objects.

Overhead lines, poles, and roadside features can also affect how a towed load moves. If equipment catches or overturns, drivers in nearby lanes may have very little time to react.

Crashes involving utility lines and large equipment often require careful review. Investigators may look at the height of the load, the route, the towing setup, and where the equipment was moved before impact. These details can help explain how a roadway hazard developed and why the outcome was so severe.
