Ariel, WA (June 27, 2026) – The police are working on the case of a 17-year-old volunteer firefighter who was seriously injured in a head-on crash on Lewis River Road in Ariel on Thursday, June 25.
Emergency units responded after a northbound vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with the southbound pickup truck driven by Riggin Bliss. The official report stated that Bliss was driving home from work when the collision occurred. He suffered a broken femur, hip, and tibia, along with bruising to his neck and chest, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities identified the other driver as 76-year-old John Jessup of La Center, who was also seriously injured and was flown to a hospital. Investigators believe impairment was a factor, and Jessup was charged with vehicular assault.
We extend our thoughts to the injured and wish them a swift recovery.
Why Head-On Crashes Result in Severe Injuries
Head-on crashes are among the most serious types of traffic accidents because the force of impact is concentrated between vehicles traveling in opposite directions. Even at moderate speeds, occupants can sustain significant injuries due to combined impact forces. Seat belts, airbags, and other safety features can reduce the severity of injuries, but they cannot eliminate the risks associated with these collisions.
Roadways with curves, limited visibility, or narrow lanes may present additional challenges for drivers. Investigators usually review factors such as lane position, speed, roadway conditions, and possible impairment when examining these accidents. Careful attention to traffic laws and remaining alert behind the wheel can help reduce the likelihood of crossing into oncoming traffic.
