Woodbury, MN (July 17, 2026) – A 16-year-old motorcycle rider was critically injured in a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash on eastbound Interstate 94 near Woodbury Drive on Tuesday afternoon, July 16. The collision was reported at 4:08 p.m.

A 2026 Hyundai Palisade and a 2005 Harley-Davidson were both traveling eastbound when traffic came to a stop ahead. Both swerved to avoid a collision. Unable to stop, the Harley made contact with the Palisade, and the rider, identified as Destin Louis Kirchoff Campbell of Pierce, Wisconsin, was thrown onto the lane.

A 2012 Kia Sorento and a 2011 Toyota Avalon then became involved in a rear-end crash. The Avalon struck Campbell where he had landed in the roadway. He was taken to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The drivers of all other vehicles involved, including a 34-year-old North St. Paul woman traveling with two young children in the Palisade, a 19-year-old Pierce woman in the Sorento, and a 66-year-old Wyoming, Minnesota man and his 65-year-old passenger in the Avalon, were not hurt in the wreck. Campbell was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The crash remains under active investigation.

We hope Destin Louis Kirchoff Campbell makes a full recovery.

What Happens When a Motorcycle Rider Falls in a Live Traffic Lane?

When a motorcycle rider goes down in an active traffic lane, the danger does not end with the initial crash. Other vehicles approaching from behind may have only seconds to react to a person on the road surface, particularly on an interstate where speeds are high, and visibility of a downed rider can be limited by surrounding traffic. The risk of a secondary strike from a following vehicle is one of the most severe hazards associated with motorcycle crashes on highways.

Chain-reaction crashes on interstates unfold across a span of seconds, with each successive vehicle having less time to react than the one before it. A driver who sees brake lights ahead may be able to slow or swerve, but a vehicle two or three positions back in fast-moving traffic may encounter the scene with almost no warning. These dynamics make multi-vehicle highway crashes particularly complex to reconstruct, since each driver’s actions must be evaluated in the context of what was visible to them at the moment they needed to respond.

Young motorcycle riders face elevated risk on high-speed roadways, where the consequences of any loss of control are amplified by the speed and density of surrounding traffic. Helmet use, as was the case here, provides meaningful protection for the head but cannot fully offset the dangers of being on the road surface in active traffic.
