What Factors Are Often Examined in Bicycle Crashes at Intersections?
Intersections are among the most common places for bicycle-related crashes because drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians may all be moving through the same space at the same time. Determining who had the right-of-way and how each person approached the intersection is often a key part of the review process.
Investigators frequently examine traffic signals, roadway markings, visibility conditions, and the paths traveled by both the bicycle and the vehicle. Physical evidence, including damage patterns and tire marks, may also help establish the sequence of actions before contact occurred.
Young cyclists can be particularly vulnerable because bicycles provide little physical protection during a roadway collision. The severity of injuries may depend on factors such as vehicle speed, point of contact, and whether protective equipment was being used. Careful examination of these details can help create a more complete understanding of how the crash unfolded.
