TEHACHAPI, Kern County, Calif., Oct. 18, 2026 — A rear-end crash injured at least one person on Friday afternoon, October 16, on Tehachapi Willow Springs Road near Oak Creek Road. The collision happened in the northbound lanes about a mile and a half south of Oak Creek Road, within an active construction zone.
The California Highway Patrol said a white Mazda struck a white Subaru Solterra from behind. What was initially logged as a crash with no injuries was upgraded minutes later to one involving at least one injury.
One vehicle reportedly went off the right shoulder, and the Subaru came to rest in the southbound lane inside the construction zone. The crash created a traffic hazard in the area, prompting a hazard advisory before a tow truck was called to clear the damaged Mazda.
The extent of injuries has not been released. The crash remains under investigation, and no cause has been confirmed.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes rear-end collisions?
Most rear-end crashes happen when a driver following too closely cannot stop in time after the vehicle ahead slows or stops suddenly, usually due to traffic, construction, or a hazard in the road.
How does following distance help prevent these crashes?
Leaving several seconds of space between your vehicle and the one ahead gives you more time to react and brake safely, especially in construction zones or areas with sudden slowdowns.
Why does distraction play such a big role in rear-end accidents?
A driver looking at a phone or otherwise not watching the road ahead may not notice brake lights or slowing traffic until it is too late to stop safely.
What injuries commonly result from rear-end crashes?
Whiplash and other neck and back injuries are common, along with head, shoulder, and seatbelt-related injuries, depending on the speed and force of impact.
What to Do After a Rear-End Crash in Tehachapi, CA
If you're involved in a rear-end crash, move to a safe location if possible and check yourself and others for injuries before doing anything else. Call 911 to report the collision, especially if the crash occurred in a construction zone or active traffic lane, since responders may need to manage traffic around the scene.
Even if you feel fine, consider getting checked by a medical professional. Injuries like whiplash don't always show symptoms right away. Exchange information with the other driver, note the location and any road conditions, and if law enforcement responds, get a copy of the report for your records.
