TEMECULA, Riverside County, Calif., Oct. 18, 2026 — A three-vehicle crash with a driver trapped inside a car closed lanes on northbound Interstate 15 near Winchester Road Saturday afternoon, October 17, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol said a red BMW, a white pickup truck and a white sedan collided on NB I-15 just south of Winchester Road shortly before 1 p.m. The agency's initial log described the crash as having unknown injuries before it was upgraded to a collision with an ambulance en route.
Dispatch logs reviewed from the CHP's traffic incident system indicate one driver's airbags deployed and that person could not get out of the vehicle on their own. Firefighters and medical crews responded to the scene, and at least one tow truck was called to clear vehicles from the roadway.
The crash blocked two lanes at first, with a third vehicle pushed onto the right shoulder. A second tow was later requested as crews worked to reopen the slow lane, which investigators said remained partially obstructed for a time as a traffic hazard.
The cause of the collision remains under review. We wish the injured a speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does following distance matter so much in traffic?
Keeping a safe gap behind the vehicle ahead gives a driver more time to brake or steer around trouble. Tailgating is a common factor in chain-reaction crashes, especially when traffic suddenly slows on a freeway.
Do crashes like this often trigger a second collision?
Yes. Once one crash blocks lanes, drivers approaching the scene may not see it in time, especially if traffic was already slowing. That's part of why crews work quickly to post warnings and clear lanes.
Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to sort out than two-car wrecks?
With three or more vehicles involved, investigators have to determine the order of impacts and how each driver reacted, which can take longer than a simple two-car collision. Witness accounts and vehicle damage patterns both play a role.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Temecula, CA
If you're involved in or come upon a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe spot if your vehicle is drivable and call 911 right away. Turn on hazard lights and, if you can do so safely, warn approaching traffic. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical provider soon afterward, since injuries from a crash don't always show up immediately. Take photos of the scene if it's safe, note which vehicles were involved, and get a copy of the official report once it's available. Temecula drivers dealing with the aftermath of a crash on I-15 should also keep records of any medical visits and vehicle damage for insurance purposes.
